The Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering was established in the year 1980 with an intake of 35 students and the number was subsequently raised to 240 students over the last four decades. The department is presently offering 4-year B. Tech program in ECE, 2-year M.Tech program in Communication Systems besides the Ph.D. program. The department was accredited by NBA for four times consecutively. It was recognized as research centre by AU, Visakhapatnam and JNTU, Kakinada. The department has student chapters of professional bodies such as IETE and the college level ISTE. These bodies regularly conduct various technical events for students.
Motivated by the recent national and international thrust on research, the department has begun to consider research seriously. As a result, a good number of faculty members obtained doctoral degrees and the remaining are pursuing. The department is giving high importance to publications which in turn gives impetus to research in the department. It established an excellent research centre in VLSI Design. The centre aims to conduct extensive research in VLSI Design contributing to academic excellence.
The field of VLSI design has an enormous growth in the research over the past two decades. With worldwide semiconductor revenue reaching $48.8 billion in October 2021, there is a need to design and produce highly efficient and specialized chips. The advanced tools in VLSI chip design enables professionals to build VLSI chip designing capabilities that can power new-age technologies like AI, IoT, Mobility, Cloud, and Analytics.
The department of E.C.E, S.R.K.R Engineering College purchased the VLSI Frontend & Backend design tools such as Xilinx Vivado 2019.1 and Mentor Graphics (semicustom and full custom packages) for students and scholars who want to leverage expertise of modern tools and technologies. Moreover, Hardware FPGA boards such as Artix-7 FPGA kit with add on Modules, Zynq - Zed Development board, Kintex KC705 Evolution Boards were also purchased to implement the designed VLSI architectures and there by evaluating performance metrics. Students and scholars are carrying out their project and research work in both analog and digital domains in VLSI using the resources available in the department.
The Centre of Excellence, while conducting the above research through concerted efforts hopes to obtain funding from various funding agencies such as DST and AICTE to further enhance the laboratory facilities to cater to the research needs of aspiring research scholars.
