The central theme and thrust of the Centre for Collaborative Product Development (CCPD) is autonomy in CAD/CAM Technologies by exchange of data through internet computing (neurocomputing, and evolutionary computations) and applications to OLE manufacturers and industrial needs.
The main aim of this centre is to investigate methods for the effective management of the internet-based process of communicating new product requirements and manufacturing performance evaluations from the critical, early stages of product development and throughout the product life cycle. Main project objectives are:
To investigate the capabilities and limitations of state-of-the-art Product Data Management (PDM) and Internet technologies with respect to the effective communication of early requirements, workflow control and change management within a distributed and collaborative product development environment.
To investigate techniques for translating early design concepts / ideas into appropriate, tentative product configurations and aggregate product models that are essential for conceptualising and measuring the resulting manufacturing performance.
To extend and enhance the aggregate factory modelling work by the inclusion of matrix based capability analysis techniques for capturing and representing qualitative and quantitative manufacturing knowledge.
To investigate whether by linking the design intent translation and manufacturing knowledge methods with web-centric PDM systems and databases it would be feasible to demonstrate the effective generation and communication of design ideas and manufacturing evaluations from the critical early development stages.
To evaluate the potential industrial benefits by testing the developed methods and prototype systems using data provided by the collaborating companies and disseminate the research results.
